Qualtrics Panels

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Building a survey is the easy part of the research process. You just decide what data you need and then set up a survey to collect it. It's the data collection that’s hard. How do you get a good representative sample of respondents from across the nation? A chain email definitely won't get the job done. If you’re lucky enough to have access to your company’s customer list, you can try sending your survey to that list. However, it may not be a representative sample and won't contain people who chose to buy from your competitors.

Qualtrics panels can solve this problem. Qualtrics can find a nationally representative sample of respondents and distribute your survey to them. Qualtrics takes care of the set up (redirects and quotas) and monitors the survey while it’s live. We only charge for the completed responses, so you never pay for people that don't respond. You can target a whole variety of demographics (gender, age, geography, coffee drinkers, etc.). You can also get responses from professionals like doctors or office managers. Give Qualtrics Panels a try.

Ending a Survey Using the Survey Flow

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

In Qualtrics you can customize the message or behavior at the end of a survey. The Survey Flow in Qualtrics allows you to control the end of survey behavior different respondents. For example, you might want those who complete the entire survey to see one message, while those who don't pass your screener questions to see another. This is a very powerful, yet simple, tool in Qualtrics.

This is done by using a combination of branches and end survey elements. The branch is where the logic is placed to specify which respondents should enter the branch. The branch can be placed anywhere in the survey flow to terminate the respondent at the appropriate time. The End Survey element is placed within the branch to make sure only those who enter the branch are then terminated from the survey at that time. The end survey element can then be customized to display a custom message or redirect to a specific website.

If you have a large block of questions, you might consider using this in conjunction with Skip Logic, which you would have skipping to the end of the block (rather than the end of the survey). This allows you to quickly terminate the survey without forcing the individual to go through the entire block of questions when they have already selected a choice requiring termination.

The end survey options in Qualtrics provide a simple, yet effective, way of controlling the survey-taking experience and providing a good experience for your respondents.
