[edit] Randomization within the question itself
Qualtrics is designed to randomize the presentation of the question options.
- In the Edit a Survey section select the question in which you wish to randomize the answers.
- In the menu on the right hand side select the Advanced Options button.
- This will bring up a new window, click on the Options tab at the top of this window. You can now select the randomization option that you want.
- To have some options randomized and others not, go to Advanced Randomization.
[edit] Randomization within the block
Qualtrics can also randomly present the questions that a respondent sees as they are taking the survey.
- Select Block options from the block task bar.
- The second tab of the pop-up window is the Question Randomization tab.
- In the upper section you can direct Qualtrics to randomly display all questions, or to randomly display a set amount of questions selected from the bank of questions (your question block).
- To have anchored questions and randomized questions see Advanced Randomization.
[edit] Randomization between blocks
Qualtrics can randomly present question blocks in the survey flow. This is useful for large surveys where you think that the participant may not answer all of the questions. You can divide the questions into blocks and randomly present any number of them in the survey.
- This is done by going to the Survey flow section of Edit a survey and adding a block randomizer to the survey flow.
[edit] Working with the Block Randomizer in the Survey Flow
The block randomizer allows you to randomize the presentation of blocks in your survey. You must have previously created the blocks to be randomized before using the block randomizer.
- To begin working with the Block Randomizer, insert the element "Block Randomizer" into the survey flow. Do this by clicking on the ―Insert Element‖ button, choosing "Block Randomizer," and then choosing the part of the survey flow you wish to place it in. The randomized blocks will appear in the survey in the place where you insert the block randomizer.
- Once the Block Randomizer is in the survey flow, click on the name of the folder. The folder will turn blue, and a box titled "Block Randomizer" will appear to the right side of your screen.
- Click "Add" and choose, one at a time, which blocks to put into the randomizer. Randomized blocks should not appear anywhere else in the survey flow.
- Once you have added all the blocks to be randomized into the Block Randomizer, make sure the number in the drop-down reflects the number of blocks you want the respondents to see. You may set it to show all of the blocks in the randomizer, or a subset of those blocks (i.e., if you have 5 blocks in the randomizer, and you want each respondent to randomly see two of those blocks, put a "2" in the box).
[edit] Advanced Randomization
In the pop-up window for Advanced Randomization 4 boxes are displayed.
- Fixed Display order shows the actual order of the presentation of questions. When you move one of the questions/choices to another box it will be replaced by a tag, letting you know that when the respondent gets to that question/choice in the sequence they will see a randomized question/choice.
- Randomized Questions/Choices is the bank from which questions are drawn and inserted into the suvey everytime the tag {{Randomized Question/Choice}} appears in the Fixed order Display.
- Randomized subset allows you to do the same thing as Randomized Questions/Choices but gives the additional option of restricting how many questions are displayed. Qualtrics will draw from this bank of questions to insert into the question/choice flow, but only up to the amount that you specify in the box.
- Unused Questions/Choices will not appear at all in the survey.
