Why Qualtrics – Alexis Lopez – Principal Analyst, People Operations – Provo, UT
What attracted you to Qualtrics in the first place?
Qualtrics has taught me so much about myself in the past 4 years. A much more interesting story is why I have stayed and I will get to that in a bit. But, in all honesty, I initially only applied because it was in the Mountains. I was living in Ohio (Go Buckeyes!) and really wanted to get out of the Midwest and back to the Rocky Mountains. I ran across a job posting for a Compensation Analyst at Qualtrics, and I leapt at the opportunity!
What was the turning point where you ‘had to have the job’?
During the interview process, I learned that Qualtrics was about to conduct their first external benchmarking exercise and that the new compensation analyst would get to lead this exercise and build out the salary structures. For an up and coming HR person, THIS is exciting! This was an opportunity that someone 1 year into their compensation career was unlikely to get anywhere else. I was champing at the bit.
Why I stay and plan on staying for quite some time.
The very first thing Qualtrics ever trusted me with was this initial compensation benchmarking. Next, I was trusted with establishing our performance management system, then promotions, and then our employee engagement process. I was one year out of school without the knowledge or experience that seemed necessary to do any of this, but senior leaders at Qualtrics worked with me and allowed me to lead these initiatives and supported and helped me through them. I was challenged and stretched beyond what I could imagine, but also had unyielding support and knew I had advocates in my corner. It was awesome…and it hasn’t stopped. Now, I am building out our people analytics team and have started an employee affinity group, “MOSAIQ” that is dedicated to attracting, retaining, and promoting employees of color at Qualtrics.
Qualtrics is never satisfied. Meaning we don’t complete or undertake something and then wipe our hands and move on. We continuously work to improve and make things better. Working at a company where they understand the power of small improvements and iterations allows you to move fast and change fast. This also allows you to trust more junior level employees with big projects because the project does not need to be perfect the first time. It needs to put you on the right path or help you quickly figure out that you are on the wrong path.
It’s very rare that I leave Qualtrics on any particular day without having learned something new. It is invigorating to grow every day. The people at the company are so smart, positive, and helpful. They stretch you and make you better. I used to think it was ridiculous when people would say they loved their work. I’d think, “sure work can be a source of growth and learning, but there are always better things than work – like camping or sports” but now I know what it is like to really love a job. I love the people, I love the work, and I love the company.
Before I came to Qualtrics, I erroneously had put myself and my career in a box. What I imagined that I could accomplish and do in the world was very specialized and small. Qualtrics has helped me erase that tiny box I’d drawn. I know I can do big/hard/hairy things and it may sound cheesy but I am back to my childhood self who really sees endless opportunities for myself and my career. I owe so much of that to Qualtrics.
