Why Qualtrics

“Why Qualtrics” – Conor L., Software Engineer

My name is Conor Lamb. I’m originally from Philly though I’ve just moved out to Dublin to work as a Software Engineer here in Qualtrics’ Dublin office. I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Computer Science as well as minors in Spanish and Economics.

What is your 'why'? Why do you do what you do...

My motivations are driven by 2 forces:

  • A deep-seated curiosity for things that are new to me, such as, ‘What would it feel like to be a highly advanced and influential software engineer?’ or ‘Is it possible to move to Ireland and not pick up the accent?’
  • FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) on all the cool stuff life (and tech) has to offer.

How does Qualtrics connect with your 'why'?

Qualtrics is constantly introducing me to new people, problems, solutions, and technologies that are fascinating. My projects continually involve tech that excites me and problems that intrigue me. On top of that lay a nice whipped cream topping of personal autonomy. The environment here at Qualtrics is generally one of excitement and mutual personal advancement, which is exactly what I’m looking for in my ‘why’.

What does your day look like?

  1. Come into work after the gym around 9:20.
  2. Toasties and Coffee
  3. Pop open Vscode or Pycharm and get crackin
  4. Catered Lunch? Maybe go out for Burritos?
  5. Code Code Code
  6. Ping Pong

You are not originally from Dublin. Can you tell us your story of moving here?

So, I moved to Dublin after finishing my Bachelor’s at the University of Pittsburgh (as well as a little summer Eurotour). I am fortunate enough to have a 100% certified Irish mother who signed me up for dual citizenship in Ireland and the USA as a kid so I was able to get the necessary documentation to stay in Ireland. Anyway, I thought it’d be pretty rad to check out Europe for a while so, during my last year at Uni, I applied to Qualtrics’ Dublin office and was lucky enough to secure a couple interviews via video chat. After some peer coding challenges, I was finally offered a job! I packed up/sold all my stuff and flew on over to start my life as Euro Conor™.

What is your top #LifeHack?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s way better to get perspective than lie and pretend to be Macho-Smart Man Mcgee. Especially when you’re new.

PS - The upstairs coffee machine makes a better latte ;)
