Why Qualtrics

Why Qualtrics – Torie Jensen – Recruiter – Provo, UT

I do what I do because I believe people matter most. A company is just an empty structure without the people who bring it to life. Every perspective and past experience we can bring on to our team makes a difference. I get satisfaction from making those connections, building teams, and helping people become the best version of themselves.

Qualtrics cares deeply about people and the experiences that make us who we are. Every time we positively influence someone's life experience, even in a small way, we have won.

What was the turning point where you 'had to have the job'?

Recruiting is viewed differently in every company. In some places, it's very much like a quota carrying sales position. You're in constant competition with your coworkers to hit your goals with little support from the teams you're hiring for. At other companies, your whole role is based around backfilling employees who are leaving.

Qualtrics is so different. We are experiencing hyper growth in every department; teams grow from 3-4 people to 30-40 within a year. We get to be strategic thought partners with our hiring teams, and they are involved in the recruiting process from start to finish. When I realized I could be coming on board to play a pivotal part in the growth of a company that is passionate about bringing in the best people, I knew it was a team I needed to be a part of.

What does your day look like?

It's different every day, and that's what I love so much about the role. I spend some days talking to prospective candidates back-to-back. Other days I come in and do a deep dive in our recruiting data to figure out where to strategically look for new candidates. I get to partner with our Finance team to develop headcount and build out competitive offers for candidates. On the best days, I get to extend offers to candidates who will be Qualtrics' veterans within 6 months of joining the team. Things change fast in recruiting and I thrive in this fast-paced environment where I've been able to problem-solve my way through things since the first day I started.

What surprised you most about working at Qualtrics?

I'm always surprised by how talented everyone is. Both in and outside of work. When I was going through the interview process they told me I'd be surrounded by top performers who would drive me forward and I assumed that would happen in most cases. But, it's true with everyone I interact with. Even those who I don't see eye-to-eye with (because that's always going to happen wherever you work) are top performing individuals who I can learn so much from. Work is more fun when the momentum of the team comes from everyone driving forward rather than one or two top performers carrying the weight.

What is your top #LifeHack?

With a recruiter lens, I feel obligated to say: make sure to have a few people review your resume before applying to a job. You don't want to make an easily corrected mistake in the first impression you get to make. The more opinions you can get the better. You'd be shocked at how many people get removed from an interview process for simple resume mistakes.

As a regular person, assuming the best in people always leads to a better outcome. It opens up situations for conversation and breaks down walls of defensiveness. I'm always happier when I don't waste time or energy assuming the worst in people or situations. I assume the best and keep my expectations low and things always find a way of working out.

How have you become involved in community at Qualtrics?

I've been really involved in our Women's groups here at Qualtrics. We have Women in Leadership discussion groups quarterly and participating in those has taught me so much. It's so empowering to talk through things in a productive way. I'm also a mentor in our Working Mothers group. I'm young in my career but I'm trying to navigate being a working mom and that's no easy feat. I really appreciate the community of working moms trying to figure out how to balance a career and to be a good parent. It's helped me so much and I love helping other people going through the same thing.
