What AI means for security in experience management

AI is now making decisions that affect people. Resolving customer issues, flagging employee attrition risk, routing patient concerns to clinicians. 

When AI has the right context, it delivers the right outcome for the right person. When that context is wrong — manipulated, biased, or incomplete — AI delivers the wrong outcome with the same confidence, at a scale faster than any human ever could. And customers, employees, and the bottom line pay the price.

Every organization is facing this reality. Without context, an AI agent could share sensitive data. A chatbot fabricates a response and a customer acts on it. An employee feedback system flags the wrong person and a manager makes a career-altering decision based on bad data. 

Consumers feel it too. More than half say misuse of personal data is their top concern when companies use AI. Meanwhile, only 20% of employees are using company-approved AI, meaning decisions are being made on data and tools security teams can't see, govern, or trust.

The real security risk is wrong decisions made with confidence in today’s AI-first world.

Why traditional security thinking falls short

Security teams have always focused on protecting data — encryption, access controls, regulatory compliance. Those still matter. But they were designed for a world where data sat in systems and humans made the decisions.

That world is ending. AI now acts on data autonomously, which means security teams need to rethink their approach to protecting experience management programs. As part of this shift, security teams need to know what actually happens to the business, the patient, the customer, or the employee if the data feeding those programs is wrong.

What AI means for security in experience management

If AI can trigger an action, that action needs to be governed. Every security leader needs to ask four questions to evaluate whether their organization is prepared:

1. What business decisions does this platform influence? Mapping integrations at a technical level isn't enough. Trace the path from data input to business outcome, including every automated workflow in between. If a signal can trigger an action, that connection needs governance.

2. How do you validate that the data going in is authentic? Open feedback channels are valuable because they're accessible. That accessibility creates exposure. Standard validation won't catch coordinated manipulation or systematic bias. Detection requires understanding what normal feedback behavior looks like for your specific programs.

3. Have you quantified the business blast radius? When an AI model misreads a workforce trend or acts on manipulated feedback, the damage is a wrong decision made with confidence. Security leaders need to quantify that exposure in business terms, not just technical ones.

4. How fast can you detect and intervene? As AI gains autonomy, the window between a bad input and a bad outcome shrinks. Monitoring must flag abnormal outputs in real time and enable intervention before a compromised system compounds the damage at scale.

The shift security leaders need to make in an AI-world

In an AI-first world, security is the foundation that makes real-time decisions trustworthy. It's what allows organizations to move fast without moving in the wrong direction. It's the difference between AI that builds trust and AI that destroys it.
