Starting point for sliders

I'm constructing a survey with a number of slider questions that range on a 1-5 scale from "Strongly Disagree" to "Strongly Agree".

What are people's opinions on setting the default position for the slider in the middle (at the neutral position) compared to starting them at the low end of the scale?

I would personally set the middle as a default so that I'm not swaying strongly positive or negative. However, I dislike using sliders in general because of the issue that it behaves like people have answered but maybe they didn't even read the question before submitting! I know it's less "fun" for respondents but I tend to use matrix tables or radio buttons instead of sliders to confirm the people are answering the question and not just submitting the default.

As I've been sitting here thinking about this, I also started thinking that matrix might be better because there is no default position. That's one less thing to worry about
