Finding community – Krish’s Pride Story

It’s Pride Month! It’s time to pass the mic to our incredible Qualtrics Pride group. Every year they bring us together in celebration and this year is no different. Throughout the month we will be sharing stories from some of our Qualtrics Pride members. Krish works in Revenue Operations Strategy in our Sydney office. This is her Pride story:

Growing up in an Indian community, it was always taboo to speak about your sexuality (if you weren't straight). For this reason I always kept it to myself, even though I knew since early high school that I was bisexual. Then I joined a global company (Apple) who has very similar values to Qualtrics. Being at a company that is all about diversity and inclusivity, I was able to join community groups for the first time. I joined the Pride Committee and was able to meet like minded individuals. I then became more comfortable talking about my sexuality and realised that my parents had evolved a lot after moving from India to Australia. They no longer held strict traditional values and were open to discussing topics like sexuality.

When same sex marriage was legalised in Australia, I think it was a very pivotal time for the LGBTQIA+ community. Since then, I know that members of my community (parents, relatives and family friends) have a more open mindset and attitude towards members of the LGBTQIA+ community. I’m grateful to live in this country and now be loud and proud of my sexuality.

This year’s theme "Pride has no borders'' signifies the breaking down of societal barriers and the opportunity for individuals to embrace their authentic selves without fear or shame, regardless of cultural or national boundaries. It speaks to the interconnectedness and resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community, transcending boundaries and promoting a global sense of unity.

Living in a country where I can openly and proudly embrace my sexuality is something I am immensely thankful for. However, the theme also compels me to acknowledge that there are still many places in the world where LGBTQIA+ individuals face discrimination, persecution, and legal barriers. "Pride has no borders” prompts us to advocate for the rights and well-being of our global LGBTQIA+ family, to challenge prejudices wherever they exist, and to work towards a world where everyone can live authentically, regardless of their geographical location, culture, or ethnicity.
