Attention: Many links on this page link back to pages regarding standard Qualtrics surveys, not just EmployeeXM surveys. Detailed below are the differences you will need to be aware of on each page. While some content may look slightly different when creating your EmployeeXM survey, feature functionality remains the same.
Qtip: This page describes functionality available to Engagement, Lifecycle, and Ad Hoc Employee Research projects. For more details on each, see Types of Employee Experience Projects.

About Standard Questions

The right question type can make all the difference for people taking the survey and for reporting on your results. Qualtrics offers many question types, but best practice for EmployeeXM surveys is to use the standard questions wherever possible: matrix table questions, multiple choice questions, text entry questions, and form field questions. Due to more complicated reporting, Qualtrics recommends only using side by side question types in situations where multiple choice and matrix table question types would not suffice.

For more information regarding what questions types you should choose and use, visit the Choosing Question Types section of the Employee Engagement Getting Started pages.

Multiple Choice

The multiple choice question type works the exact same way in Employee Engagement surveys as it does in standard Qualtrics surveys, except that the visualizations offered in the Survey Platform reports do not apply to dashboards. However, the response export in Employee Experience is the same as the response export described for the Survey Platform. For more information, visit the Survey Platform’s multiple choice support page.

While multiple-answer question types are supported, only the first-selected answer will register for your dashboard scales. If you are planning on using scales for your multiple choice question, we recommend that you make the question single-answer.

Matrix Table

The matrix table question type works the exact same way in EmployeeXM surveys as it does in standard Qualtrics surveys, except that the visualizations offered in the Survey Platform reports do not apply to dashboards. However, the response export in Employee Experience is the same as the response export described for the Survey Platform. For more information, visit the Survey Platform’s matrix table support page.

Only the likert and profile matrix variations can be used with dashboard scales. While multiple-answer question types are supported for the survey, only the first-selected answer will register for your dashboard scales. If you are planning on using scales for your matrix question, we recommend that you make the question single-answer.

Warning: EX surveys are incompatible with bipolar and maxdiff matrix variations. Do not use these variations in your EX surveys.

Text Entry

The text entry question type works the exact same way in EmployeeXM surveys as it does in standard Qualtrics surveys, except that the visualizations offered in the Survey Platform reports do not apply to dashboards. However, the response export in Employee Experience is the same as the response export described for the Survey Platform. For more information, visit the Survey Platform’s text entry support page.

This question type is not compatible with dashboard scales.

Form Field

The form field question type works the exact same way in EmployeeXM surveys as it does in standard Qualtrics surveys, except that the visualizations offered in the Survey Platform reports do not apply to dashboards. However, the response export in Employee Experience is the same as the response export described for the Survey Platform. For more information, visit the Survey Platform’s form field support page.

This question type is not compatible with dashboard scales.

Side by Side

The side by side question type works the exact same way in EmployeeXM surveys as it does in standard Qualtrics surveys, except that the visualizations offered in the Survey Platform reports do not apply to dashboards. However, the response export in Employee Experience is the same as the response export described for the Survey Platform. For more information, visit the Survey Platform’s side by side support page.

Side by side questions are compatible with dashboard scales so long that every column in the question is a scaled response (likert) column. While multiple-answer question types are supported for the survey, only the first-selected answer will register for your dashboard scales. If you are planning on using scales for your side by side question, we recommend that you make the question single-answer.

Qtip: Due to more complicated reporting in dashboards and data exports, Qualtrics recommends only using side by side question types in situations where multiple choice and matrix table question types would not suffice.
