About Mention Languages and Locations

Qualtrics Social Connect automatically assigns languages and locations to mentions based on the content and metadata of the mention. This page covers how mention languages and locations are assigned, how to translate mentions, and how to change a mention’s assigned language or location.

Mention Language Assignment

Social Connect uses Google’s Compact Language Detection model to automatically assign mention languages. This section covers how to view your mention’s assigned language, and change it, if desired.

To view or change your mention’s language:

  1. Click the three dot menu on a mention.clicking the three dot menu on a mention and choosing edit
  2. Select Edit.
  3. Your mention’s language is in the Language dropdown field. If the automatically assigned language is incorrect, click this dropdown and choose the correct language.

Qtip: If you change the language, make sure to click Save at the bottom of the page.

Translating Mentions

You can translate mentions that are not in your native language so that you can respond to them better. The automatic translation service uses Microsoft’s Translator. The mention will be translated to whatever language you have as your account’s default language, which you can set in your personal preferences.

Qtip: Content submitted for translation through the Microsoft Translator are not written to persistent storage. There will be no record of the submitted text, or portion thereof, in any Microsoft data center.

To translate a mention:

  1. Click the translate button on the mention.translating a mention using the translation button
  2. The translated content will appear below the original message.

Mention Location Assignment

Every mention is assigned a country location. This is the country in which the mention was written or posted. Depending on the source of the mention, location can be determined in different ways.

To view or change your mention’s location:

  1. Click the three dot menu on the mention.clicking the three dot menu on a mention and choosing edit
  2. Select Edit.
  3. Your mention’s location is in the Country dropdown field. If the automatically assigned location is incorrect, click this dropdown and choose the correct location.

Blogs, News Websites, and Forums

For blogs, news websites, and forums, the top-level domain name is checked. If the website has a country-specific top-level domain, then that country is used as the location.

Example: If my website is www.example.fr, then the mention will be assigned “France” as the location since .fr is a top-level domain for French websites.

If the site does not have a top-level domain (for example, .com, .eu, .net, .org) then Qualtrics will try to find the country location by geolocating the IP address used to host the website.

Social Networks

The location data for a mention from a social network varies by source and is not available for all sources. This section covers how location is determined for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube.

  • Facebook: Facebook restricts location data for 3rd party applications. Therefore, the location for Facebook mentions will be empty. However, you can edit a Facebook mention to include a country.
  • Twitter: If the tweet has a location specified, then that location will be used. If there is no location, then Qualtrics will use the location that is set on the profile of the Twitter user who created the mention.
  • Instagram: Instagram restricts location data for 3rd party applications. Therefore, the location for Instagram mentions will be empty. However, you can edit an Instagram mention to include a country.
  • Youtube: Youtube restricts location data for 3rd party applications. Therefore, the location for Youtube mentions will be empty. However, you can edit a Youtube mention to include a country.
